Optimus Brian is back! The beer we created for the man who set up our lovely new brewery, Brian Midgley, has returned.
Heavily inspired by Little Creatures Pale Ale, OB is a 4.8% light golden pale ale, with some gentle malt complexity and those classic pineapple, white grape and pine aromas from the staring hop duo; Enigma and Vic Secret. It's a really interesting style that captures the change from Australia's inherited brewing preferences from the countries English immigrants.
Australian Pale Ales are almost as if brewers intended to make British style pale ales, but were restricted to using Australian cultivated ingredients, and instead of casks, they packaged the beer into kegs that could keep the beers colder and fresher in the Australian climate. Maize has been added into the grist of the beer, as Australian brewers often added a proportion of maize to their lagers and some pale ales as it was cheap, didn't require malting and was high in sugar. Some of the earliest brewing in the Aussie colony was using Maize, with the first commercially produced alcohol in Sydney in 1796 being reported as a Corn Beer. We've also used our new Burton house yeast which is a much older strain.
